TALLAHASSEE – A group of lawyers are banding together to help Florida residents receive their unemployment benefits.
Tallahassee attorneys Marie Mattox and Gautier Kitchen have asked a Florida judge to force the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to pay all applicants who’ve had troubles submitting a claim or collect their benefits.
Attorney Mattox told the judge during a hearing that there are thousands of people who have been wrongfully deemed ineligible.
Florida’s DEO Chief Financial Officer Damon Steffens says the system was only designed to handle 5,000 people at a time. Steffens says the DEO has spent $10 million improving the connect system since the pandemic outbreak.
The case is set to continue Thursday at 1 p.m.
