SARASOTA – Following Wednesdays unprecedented second impeachment of President Trump, Florida’s U.S. Republican Representatives speak out against an impeachment trial mere days away from President-elect Joe Biden.

“No one is above the law, not even the President of the United States,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

13 months from President Donald Trump’s first impeachment; the House voted 232 to 197 to impeach President Trump in what Democrats argue was his role in inciting the deadly takeover at the U.S. Capitol.

Ten House Republicans crossed the aisle and voted with their Democratic colleagues in favor of impeachment. With less than five days before inauguration day causing tempers to flare.

“Now, some have cited, some have cited, the metaphor that the president lit the flame will they let actual flames actual fires,” said Rep. Matt Gaetz.

District 17th Rep. Greg Steube saying on the House floor the president’s actions did not constitute the “high crimes and misdemeanors” as outlined.

“I don’t believe the elements of incitement of violence was met,” said Rep. Steube, “Therefore, you don’t have a high crime or misdemeanor. Therefore, you can’t impeach a president just because the Democrats don’t like him.”

Since talks of impeachment began following last Wednesday attack on the Capitol, Rep. Steube says that the rushed impeachment process has only served to further divide the country for the sake of partisanship.

“All they’re trying to do is shove just shove this through in the very limited amount of time left in President Trump’s term so that he can’t run for office again,” said Rep. Steube.

And he isn’t alone: all 15 of Florida’s Republican U.S. Representatives opposed the removal of President Trump from office, including Congressman Vern Buchanan.

In a statement sent to SNN, Congressman Buchanan said “an attempt to remove Trump form office this close to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration day is quote “divisive and misguided.”

And “Congress should be focused on helping people get the COVID vaccine and on efforts to reopen the economy and our schools.”

The Senate is said to move forward with an impeachment trial is next Tuesday – the day before Biden’s inauguration.
