SIESTA KEY (SNN TV) – If you’ve been to Siesta Key lately, you may have noticed something new there.

Sarasota County workers recently installed a mini roundabout on Higel Avenue and Ocean Boulevard to replace the stop sign there. It’s the first of its kind in Sarasota County.

The Herald-Tribune reports the county didn’t have the right-of-way needed for a traditional roundabout. The mini roundabout they installed gives larger vehicles more flexibility — cars towing a vehicle can drive over the plastic boards when making a wider turn. County workers began installing it Monday, June 12, and finished it three days later.

The county project manager says the equipment installed can last up to 50 years. However, she says the county is going to see how this works out first and can redesign the intersection if needed.

If you use the roundabout, yield at any of the approaches, yield to motorists in the circle, and drive 15 mph.
