SARASOTA (WSNN) – A musical theater camp takes advantage of virtual learning to prepare for what the future may have in store.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe offers their annual summer camp, online, due to the pandemic. The camp offers intensive training in acting, dancing, and music.

As the art world is an ever-changing one, coordinators are preparing students for online video submissions and online auditions.

Instructors and students say the transition was smoother than expected.

“I live through the arts, and so I was really struggling with the fact that I was like, dang, I may not be able to perform for who knows how long,” 4th-year camper, Canela Vasquez, said.  “So with the instructors doing the online camp has given me the opportunity to look forward to something to do every morning, instead of just sitting around wishing I could do something artistic.”

“I think keeping the students engaged and excited ultimately about the final project is the biggest part of it for me,” Music Director and Vocal Coach, Brennan Stylez, said.

Camp has allowed for a creative outlet for all involved.

Their final project includes a solo in-person audition and a music video. This week is their last week.
