VENICE, Fla. (SNN TV) – Of all the accomplishments the area’s best volleyball team has, there is one missing.

The six-time state champion Venice High volleyball team has not won back-to-back state titles.

Venice won titles and followed it up with strong seasons, but never repeated as champs. It won championships in 1998, 2005, 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2022. The closest the Indians came was in 2013 when they lost in the state semifinal to Ocala Vanguard and then came back to win in 2014.

The schedule is loaded as usual with home matches against Saint Thomas Aquinas, IMG National and Miami Westminster Christian. Venice will visit defending state champion Clearwater Central Catholic, Trinity Catholic in Ocala and Lake Highland Prep.

Entering his 30th season, Coach Brian Wheatley will be in search of his 700th career victory when Venice opens the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Sarasota High.
