VENICE, Fla. (SNN TV) – The Venice City Council discusses possibly lowering the property tax rate for the projected 2023-24 budget.
The Herald-Tribune reported that a more than 14 percent increase in property values gave city officials about $3.4 million more in anticipated property tax revenues.
Even with increasing reserves for natural disasters, the additional revenue means there was still extra money, totaling nearly $5.6 million.
All council members who were present said they’re willing to support a fiscally responsible tax rate cut. Council Member Helen Moore said not to trim the tax rate too drastically. She cited the Great Recession as a reason; the city had to lay off 80 workers during that downturn.
The first public hearing on the budget is set for 5:01 p.m. on September 12.
