SARASOTA – A step closer to normalcy. Second doses are giving those on the Suncoast more security when it comes to their health.

“This is the only way we are going to be able to bring our community back,” said Mayor of the City of Sarasota, Hagen Brody.

The curtains may be closed at the Van Wezel but the performing arts hall is putting their facility to good use.

“We thought what a great idea to do it here at the Van Wezel and theaters across the country are offering their venues because we’ve been closed,” said Executive Director of the Van Wezel.

The second dose vaccination clinic was by appointment only for those who received their first dose of Moderna at the end of February

“You know this is the most efficient operation I’ve seen, it’s a little bit longer than the first shot but they’re efficient, they know what they’re doing, it moves right along, I think it’s great,” said second dose recipients, Dave and Karen Crane.

Another Sarasota resident agrees both first and second dose clinics ran beyond smoothly

“I don’t usually give comments like that, but I have to say it was wonderfully well run, people we’re positive,” said second dose recipient, Gregory Engelhardt.

Crane says the second dose gives him and his wife more security when it comes to their health.

“We’re not going to get super sick, we’re not going to the hospital if we come in contact with it so it’s a relief, and it’s something that we have to get used to,” said Dave Crane.

“I hope that everybody, even the people that are afraid to get the shot, I hope they’re willing to do it so we can get this thing done and put away,” said Crane.

Executive Director of the Van Wezel, Mary Bensel says she is just happy to help

“It makes me feel really good after such a deep horrible time for the arts, to be closed to be able to do something that will make us open up again,” said Bensel.

An estimated 3,000 will receive their second dose of the Moderna vaccination this weekend at the Van Wezel.
