SARASOTA-MANATEE COUNTY (WSNN) – The couch has become the hot spot to watch movies, but not to worry, the Mall at University Town Center is offering free drive-in movies.

Since the pandemic forced movie theaters to close, along with many other forms of entertainment, UTC Marketing Director, Lauren Clark, says they wanted to offer something free and fun for the community.

So they purchased a brand new 20-foot by 40-foot screen and began offering drive-ins on June 19. They’re screening different movies every Friday and Saturday night at 8:30 until August 1st.

Clark says CDC Guidelines are in place, with cars directed to park in every other space, so there are at least 12 feet between each vehicle.

“We really want to give back t the community; this free opportunity to get out in a safe comfortable environment, you’re with your family, you’re in your car, and it’s just an enjoyable experience for people,” Clark said.

People can sign up to get free tickets to sit and watch movies from their cars with the radio on 89.7.

Clark says they’ve sold out every week, so she encourages people to put themselves on the waitlist. There’s a 175 limit, so people need to reserve early.

She says they plan to offer it more days of the week.

Movie listings are online on UTC’s website
