SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN) – Hurricane Idalia has passed by the Suncoast. In the aftermath of the storm, we’re seeing road closures, flooding, damage, and power outages.

“While we fared better than Hurricane Ian, we are still looking at some of the challenges, in the aftermath of the storm. Right now, today, our county is out there doing our preliminary damage assessment. And we’re seeing some roadway damage on our coastal communities. Obviously, some flooding, and just damage to our beach line,” said Jamie Carson, Sarasota County’s Director of Communications.

Carson says the public works team and law enforcement are working together to ensure safety. Carson advises everyone to stay clear of flooded roadways, and heed the warning of local law enforcement.

“If you come up on water when you’re in your vehicle, turn around. There is no need to go through that flooded water, that standing water. If you’re without power, and we know right now about 8,000 of our community members, according to FPL, are without power. If you’re utilizing a generator, please be safe when utilizing that generator,” said Carson.

Solid waste services resumed Wednesday, but your pickup day will be pushed back by one day.
