SARASOTA – For more than 30 years the Friendliest Catch Fishing Tournament has offered people with special needs an opportunity to head out into the open water for day of fun.

“The best thing about today is everyone’s a winner,” said Lucy Nicandri.

Suncoast Summerfest makes its return this year after being postponed by the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and popular event came along with it.

The 35th Annual Friendliest Catch Fishing Tournament offers kids, teens, and adults with special needs an opportunity to reel in the catch of the day.

“I really enjoyed this place it was awesome,” said Jack O’Grady. “I really enjoyed fishing a lot, riding on the boat it was awesome.”

Five organizations brought more than 50 participants to the catch and release tournament. Vice President of Adult Day Services with the Haven Becky Forest says today allows for some individuals to get on a boat and fish for the first time.

“These guys are able to get out on boats and go out on the bay and enjoy their own surroundings; and have some great people to take them fishing,” said Forest. “And give them experiences some of them would never have.”

Boat captains from across the Suncoast volunteered their time and their vessels to ensure all of the participants would have an enjoyable and unique experience out in Sarasota Bay.

“Nobody goes home a loser everybody’s a winner,” said Nicandri. “They leave with a trophy; they leave with a gift bag and have a wonderful day out on the water.

And it really helps connect the dots if you will about why Suncoast Charities for Children does Suncoast Summerfest and where the money goes.”

Planning is already underway for next year’s tournament, officials plan to add more events to Summerfest.
