SARASOTA – After a year of planning, a school trip is cancelled, thanks to the coronavirus.

The Community Day School in Sarasota has a student-exchange program in Israel.

The purpose is to experience life as a high school student in Israel, for a deeper cultural understanding of the Jewish people and customs.

But, Friday morning, the trip leaders cancelled the trip for safety reasons related to travel concerns.

“We were all set leave on Monday,” Head of Community Day School, Daniel Ceaser said. And we heard the news that due to travel restrictions and the concern about possible quarantines. We just felt that it wasn’t prudent for us to travel at this point.”

While this is a once–in–a–lifetime opportunity, eighth-grade student, Tyler Ruben, says he understands the situation.

“I’m bummed that it got cancelled, but I see where the school is coming from and I really appreciate it, that they’re looking out for our health and safety. A lot of kids were upset as well, but rightfully so,” Tyler Ruben said.

The program plans to reschedule their trip when the travel restrictions get better.
