TAMPA/NORTH PORT (SNN TV) – Officers and rescue crews from Miami-Dade County and Tampa make their way to the hardest hit areas of Southwest Florida after Hurricane Ian left a path of destruction

Saturday morning, about 200 officers from Miami-Dade County and the city of Hollywood left to Fort Myers to help out and support those affected by Ian. 16 agencies were sending about 180 personnel and 89 vehicles to aid their neighbors on the Gulf Coast.

The city of Tampa also send help. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor says the city sent officers, emergency vehicles and tons of rescue gear to North Port.

“We have 40 Tampa police officers and 15 Tampa fire rescue personnel along with a myriad of equipment, from chainsaws, to Zodiac boats, to generators, [and] high rescue vehicles that are all heading… down to North Port to help in anyway shape or form that we can to get them back up on their feet,” Castor says.
