MANATEE COUNTY – Halloween is here and the Sarasota Police Department and Manatee County Sheriff’s office wants all of us to have a safe and happy Halloween.

“We’re going into Halloween and the best thing to do is use caution,” said Melissa Conway, Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Conway says Halloween is about kids and their safety. “If you have young children you really need to be out with them trick or treating to make sure you know where they are going and what’s happening around them,” she said.

Conway recommends having reflective clothing or flashlights on Halloween night helps drivers spot your little ones and keep them safe on the roadway, but that’s not all.

“Always check the candy make sure if you see any open anything that looks suspicious when in doubt throw it out,” said Conway.

Officer Danny Robbins of the Sarasota Police Department has tips for trick or treaters who are planning on heading out and collecting candy without parents or adult supervision.

“I would make sure you have a cellphone, said Officer Robbins. “Go to areas that you know, go to areas that are well lit.”

And for any tricksters who are looking to start trouble the sheriff’s office has a response for that too.

“If you’re looking to start trouble on Halloween and trying to do tricks instead of treats we are going to be out there we’re going to be paying close attention and we have our community looking too,” said Conway. “People know that when they see something suspicious they can let us know and we’re going to look into it.”

Other tips for parents are to make sure your trick or treaters costume fits right and doesn’t cause them to trip but most importantly have fun.
