SARASOTA – With nearly half of Florida’s ICU’s at least 90% full the Suncoast is in need of plasma.

People who have recovered from the virus are being asked to come in and donate convalescent plasma. The Suncoast Blood Centers reports plasma is the number one preferred treatment in hospitals for COVID-19 patients.

The critical shortage in part was caused by the surge in patients in hospitals at the start of the pandemic. According to the blood centers each donation of plasma creates four doses of the treatment.
