SARASOTA – It was a day to give back to the community that helped Tawana Spann at her time of need.

“When he first came up missing one of the main things was I just didn’t want it to be where if something had happen it would be in vain,” said Spann, mother of Jabez Spann.

The Suncoast Blood Bank and the Jabez Spann Foundation partnered up for their inaugural blood drive to save lives and keep the memory of Jabez alive.

“There is as shortage of African American blood and I guess in all. So we need as many people, African Americans, to come out and try to give blood,” said Spann.

Greg Cruz, a blood donor, is O- he came out to help as much as he could as a universal blood donor.

“Donating blood is very important, especially if you have a universal blood type, you know you could save lives,” said Cruz. “I don’t know the statistics but I know a little blood goes a long way.”

Dozens came out in support and donated blood. The Suncoast Blood Bank donated $10 to the Jabez Foundation for every blood donor received.

“The foundation is important but today even through the dedication I’m honored for the dedication the blood to me is a little bit more important and what we need to focus on,” said Spann.

Spann’s mission is still focusing on helping families with missing loved ones get the help and resources they need to continue their search.

“Everybody knows everyday life is already a struggle staying afloat for most people,” said Spann “So to try and look for your child on top of that I mean it makes the burden even heavier than what you think it would be.”

Though Spann was able to get closure by bringing her son home she hopes he can see the impact his life has had on the community.

“I just wish he was here to kinda see what was going on. I’m just hoping it just wasn’t in vain and that he’s able to help some other people,” said Spann.
