SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – The big yellow bus didn’t drive kids, but instead was used to collect supplies for them.

The Sarasota County School staff hosted a School Supply Drive, Saturday. School buses were parked at two locations. One bus was parked at the Target near UTC and the other was in North Port at the Walmart on 17000 Tamiami Trail.

Staff was collecting supplies to help the children in need. Things like backpacks, books, notepads, and pencils, just to name a few.

“The need is so significant,” Education Foundation Chief Development Officer of Sarasota County Diana Dill said. “Most people don’t realize here in Sarasota we have almost 50-percent of the children that are on free-and-reduced lunch, which in essence means they don’t have the financial resources to really have the supplies they need to start school. And especially this year. We want to make sure that kids start off to a great start.”

The school district is going to ensure that all supplies are evenly distributed to all elementary schools.

This is the first of many ‘Stuff the Bus’ events to come.
