SARASOTA – SRQ officials say Friday’s visit to Sarasota by Vice President Mike Pence marks the first time the current administration visits the Suncoast.

President of SRQ Airport Rick Piccolo says it’s an honor for any sitting president’s administration to land at SRQ. However Piccolo says it takes time to properly plan out a visit of this magnitude.

Piccolo says they started planning for the vice presidents arrival a week before. Those preparations included meeting with the Secret Service and the Air Force.

“It’s everything from where the aircraft is going to park, how it’s going to arrive, when are we going to sweep the runways and check them before they land, air space closures and coordination with all the different agencies that it takes to host a president or vice president.”

Nearly 100 people awaited Vice President Pence arrival at SRQ Airport and even got a private tour on-board Air Force Two.
