NORTH PORT (WSNN) – Major developments in the search for Brian Laundrie, as officials release the identification of the human remains found in the Carlton Reserve.

The FBI confirms the skeletal remains found at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park yesterday are of Brian Laundrie.

The Laundrie family attorney, Steven Bertolino, tells SNN that Brian’s parents Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed. He adds, “We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundrie’s privacy at this time.”

When I spoke to forensics experts earlier today, they said since the body was underwater and exposed to many the elements over such a long period of time, the medical examiner had to rely on bones samples of the remains.

“We know that the sun, we know that ultraviolet rays, we know that bacteria, we know that heat destroys DNA,” USF’s Forensics Studies and Justice Program Coordinator Peter Massey said. “And unfortunately, these partial remains were exposed to all of that. But we have a way to work around that, such as going for a tooth or marrow from a long bond.”

The FBI says they were able to confirm it was Brian through dental records.

Since Brian was not found alive, we don’t know what this means for the Gabby Petito homicide investigation.
