SARASOTA (WSNN) – COVID-19 is not stopping Selby Gardens from celebrating its 45th anniversary.   And another milestone.

“So, we have our 45th-anniversary theme, the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment theme, the 100th anniversary of the Selby’s buying this property,” Horticulture Director Mike McLaughlin said.

Theming the exhibit accordingly: “Women Breaking the Glasshouse Ceiling,” “floral style.”

“A lot of people get flowers for their anniversary, and we thought what a fun way to celebrate these landmark moments in Selby’s history and in the History of the United States,”  Orchid Show Curator Jeannie Perales said.

All meant to be a jubilant and fun atmosphere with 1920’s music, architectural motifs, and a suffrage color scheme.

Purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity, green for hope, and gold for light and life.

“When you walk in, you’ll experience spinning orchids; a first for Selby Gardens.”

“It’s just a new way to look at orchids,” McLaughlin said. We want people to see orchids, appreciate orchids and see them in a whole new light here at Selby Gardens.”

A few Sarasota residents got a sneak peek Friday.

It was really fascinating just to be underneath it, look up at all the colors and the movement,” Selby Garden member, Bryan Useo said.

“It feels really cool to be in a community that has something so gorgeous and celebrating something so awesome,” Selby Garden member, Sarah Guldner said.

“We hope people recognize there’s a lot to celebrate in this world and even today in 2020, in such a strange moment for all of us,” Perales said.

The exhibit opens Saturday and runs through November 29th.
