NEW ORLEANS (SNN-TV) – Buccaneers NFC South rival, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced he is stepping down.

The 58-year-old Payton had three years remaining on his contract, but reportedly did not commit to returning to the team after a difficult 2021 season.

Payton is the most successful coach in franchise history. He leaves with a record of 152 wins and 89 losses and a Super Bowl victory in 2010.

When he arrived in 2006, the Saints were one of the NFL’s perennial doormats, but Payton and quarterback Drew Brees quickly turned the saints into a winner and a consistent contender.

Payton is rumored to be eyeing a broadcasting position; possibly with Fox.  That idea comes as news circulates that Troy Aikman may be leaving to work with Amazon Prime on their Thursday Night Football broadcasts.
