SARASOTA – The Sarasota Police Department needs your help with any information regarding a shooting on the Suncoast.

SPD is investigating a shooting that happened on December 28th in the 1800 block of 22nd Street. Officers say 48-year-old James Rivers of Sarasota was found with life-threatening injuries that were consistent with a gunshot wound. Rivers was transported to Sarasota Memorial hospital where he later died.

“At first we just determined this was a suspicious death just based on what we learned when we first arrived on scene,” said spokeswoman Genevieve Judge. “But once we began to speak to people in the area, possible witnesses, and began collecting evidence we learned that this was a death that was not caused by himself or accidental it actually turned out it was by someone else.”

The investigation is ongoing and SPD asking for anyone with possible information to contact SPD or call 941-366-TIPS or call Detective Kim Laster at 941-263-6827.
