SARASOTA – Part of their mission is to offer shelter, meals and recovery programs, but now with social distancing and lack of staff it makes it more difficult.

That’s according to the area commander for Sarasota County, Major Charles Whiten.

He says the increase in call volume has gone up about 20 percent, which is beyond capacity.

Major Whiten says mass sheltering is more challenging when we are required to stay apart from each other.

“It’s a significant disruption to the way the program is delivered,” Major Whiten said. “So we have focused really on essential services. We’re making sure people are fed, sheltered, and to the degree, we can, to continue as normal, whatever new normal looks like.”

Because they are working around the clock 24/7 to help their clients, the Salvation Army is in need of masks and donations.
