SARASOTA – “What could be more perfect? Valentine’s Day and falling in love,” says Stage Director, Martha Collins.
The Sarasota Opera portrays William Shakespeare’s story of the iconic lovers, Romeo and Juliet, closely, until the very end… Collins says she is beyond excited to bring this story to Sarasota because you don’t often get a chance to do it.
“It hasn’t been done in years, since the ’90s, but the music is so exquisitely beautiful and I feel so fortunate because I’ve been given a cast who look like their roles who sound beautiful, who are so comfortable with each other so it’s been really a treat because it’s so believable that these incredibly talented singers are falling in love before our very eyes,” says Collins.
Hannah Brammer is Juliet and Andrew Surrena will portray Romeo. Sarasota Audiences may recognize them from their performances last year in Magic Flute.
“So audiences know that they are in for a treat with these two singers,” says Collins.
Collins, says it has been very satisfying for the Opera to be able to bring so much detail to the story and characters
“Sarasota Opera is particularly wonderful for an opera like this because we do get enough rehearsal time to really explore the characters to really bring them to life for the audience,” says Collins. “The music is so evocative, of passion and love and the story. So it’s been a wonderful exploration for all of us to delve into this story and bring it to life.”
