ST. PETERSBURG (SNN-TV) – The Rays have already clinched their division and a spot in the postseason, but their victory last night was also meaningful as well.

In defeating the Astros 7-0, the Rays improved to 98-60 on the season, which broke the franchise record for wins in a season, eclipsing the 97 win total of the 2008 team that inevitably made the World Series.

On top of that, the Rays also clinched the best record in the American league, which gives them home field advantage through at least the first two round of the playoffs. Rays manager Kevin Cash weighed on the record breaking accomplishment. “This organization has been really, really good for quite some time now. To be able to be at the top of the list with that many wins, says a lot about the guys in the clubhouse.”

The Rays and Astros close out their season tonight in Houston. First pitch is set for 7:10 from Minute-Maid Park.
