SARASOTA – Having a child who is part of the LGBTQ+ community is a different experience and journey for every parent, but for one Sarasota mom, the love for her child went beyond acceptance and turned into activism.

“Our kids needs us, especially now more than ever, we just gotta love them,” said Editor of the Scout Guide & Co-Chair of Equality Florida.

Nikki Logan- Curran serves as Editor of the Scout Guide, an annual publication highlighting the best of local businesses, restaurants and beyond on the Suncoast. She also serves as co-chair of Equality Florida, the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBTQ+ community, but her most proud and notable role, is a mother of two.

“I have an LGBTQ kid, I have been an advocate and ally all of my life, even as a kid in high school coming from a really rural town in Mississippi where that definitely was not the norm to be that open and accepting, fortunately I came from a loving household where we embraced everybody,” said Logan-Curran.

Recent LGBTQ+ related legislation in the state of Florida has not only hit her heart but her home.

“I’ve seen and heard the things that people have said to my son, about my son, I’ve overheard conversation’s I’ve had people question my parenting by just loving and letting him be who he is, so it’s unfortunate, I think our jobs as adults and parents is to love our kids,” said Logan-Curran.

The legislation has not only been negative for youth but for their parents and loved ones too. This is why Curran turned to therapy and acupuncture.

“I know that if you take some time to meditate and have a friend that you can talk to you can get through these cycles, but when anger and hate and other people placing their opinions on you, that’s when it gets very, very scary,” said Logan-Curran.

“Having support makes everybody the best parent they can be to anyone that’s going through any kind of transitional change no matter what it is, no matter if it’s just sexual identity, sexual orientation, whether it’s questioning, whatever it is, that support is super necessary,” said Dr. of Acupuncture of Sarasota Center for Acupuncture & Nutrition, Dr. Christina Captain.

Curran encourages others who are fighting for equal rights to find their best form of support and share your unconditional love.

“These kids are scared right now, the legislation is very, very  scary for them, they just want to know that they have the basic rights as everybody else, they can live, work, play, be married, go to school, and be proud of who they are,” said Logan-Curran.
