SARASOTA – It was a chance for the fans to get autographs, pictures and talk to the racers of the Powerboat Grand Prix ahead of the big race on Sunday.

Sarah Catell with Suncoast Charities for Children says this event allows for the fans and racers to get pumped up in time for the race. “Having the fans meet the racers just builds up that energy gets everybody excited they can choose to see what race teams they want to cheer for,” she said.

Wayne Valder is a defending champion that will compete in the Super Cat Class. He represents New Zealand and is looking to take home his first U.S. victory for his team.

“This is our third season here for myself so we’ve come all the way from New Zealand, which is on the other side of the world, and one of my bucket lists goals is to win the U.S. 1 Championship here in America,” said Valder.

Rolo Miles has been a fan of powerboats races for years and is excited to attend his first Powerboat Grand Prix on the Suncoast.

“Always enjoyed powerboat racing and everything that it brings so I think coming out and being able to interact with the teams from around the world and around the country and getting to see them and shake hands and just spread the excitement,” said Miles.

Ahead of Sunday’s race Catell recommends arriving early to Lido Beach to secure a good spot, stay hydrated and most importantly have a good time.

Sunday’s race begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday with the course stretching around all of Lido Beach.
