OSPREY, Fla. (SNN TV) — It was a successful space launch for four Suncoast 8th graders.

SNN reported earlier this month that four Pine View students were sending an experiment to the International Space Station. The goal is to see if microalgae can remove nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater in space. If that can be done, astronauts at the ISS and other space missions would have a readier supply of water.

After some delays, the launch finally took place Friday with a time set for 8:28 p.m. After two weeks, the equipment will be returned to Earth, and the students can study the results.

This was part of a larger Student Spaceflight Experiments Program which sent 37 experiments, including theirs, from around the nation and from Canada and Ukraine into space.
