SARASOTA – It’s been nearly a decade since Rodney Mitchell was killed by two Sarasota County deputies in 2012.
Family and friends of Mitchell gathered to celebrate the life of the 23-year-old who was shot and killed following a routine traffic stop that authorities say turned violent when Mitchell drove at an officer.
Despite the afternoon downpours dozens of Black Live Matter supporters and allies gathered at Fredd Glossie Atkins Park to celebrate the life and legacy of Mitchell. His mother Natasha Clemons thanked those who took part of the marches across the Suncoast last week to raise awareness of the systemic racism in some local law enforcement.
SNN reached out to a representative of the Black Live Matter Alliance Manasota who was present at the tribute for Mitchell, but were not available for comment.
