BOSTON, MA (SNN-TV) – The NBA is retiring Bill Russell’s iconic No. 6.

The Basketball Hall of Famer died on July 31st at the age of 88. He is the first player to have his number retired across all 30 teams.

The NBA is also planning to honor Russell with a commemorative patch emblazoned on the right shoulder of the teams’ jerseys, and all courts will display a clover-shaped logo with the number six on the sideline. Russell is the most successful player in NBA history, with 11 titles and five MVP’s

25 players currently wore No. 6 last season, including LeBron James, and will be grandfathered in and can continue to wear it.
