SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – A motorcyclist is dead after a crash in Sarasota County, Tuesday morning.

The fatal crash happened around 5:30 AM at U.S. 41 and River Road.

Florida Highway Patrol reports the motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man, was traveling northbound on U.S. 41 when he ran a red light. He slammed into a box truck that was making a left turn from River Road onto U.S. 41.

FHP Trooper Kenn Watson says he’s not sure if speed was a factor, but the bad weather condition was.

“During mornings that are very foggy, with that sea fog rolling in, it does make things much more difficult to see directly in front of you,” Watson said. “We want to make sure that our speeds are a little bit slower than even perhaps the posted speed limit.”

He adds the fog brings about high humidity, making the roads more slippery.

Sarasota County E.M.S. pronounced the motorcyclist dead on-scene. There were no injuries to the box truck driver.

FHP is still investigating.

Over the past several days, Watson says there have been six fatalities on the Suncoast.
