SARASOTA – Meals on Wheels of Sarasota is delivering more food and items to people now, more than ever.
With the number of people losing their jobs and going into isolation, executive director, Marjorie Broughton says they have had an increase in clients of about 50 percent in just one day.
They have also gained nearly 100 more volunteers in the last two weeks.
Broughton says they are taking all the necessary precautions of wearing mask and gloves, taking temperatures of everyone who steps into the building, and operating at six feet apart.
She says in some ways this crisis is a blessing in disguise because people are coming together to help.
And, vendors who have no one to sell to are now able to give them that food.
“So, in the last week, we’ve have been able to deliver blueberries, blackberries, fresh tomatoes, even fresh asparagus in some cases to our clients, which we were able to get at a very low price,” Broughton said. “I mean they feel like it’s Christmas all over again.”
As the number of clients keeps increasing, the need for donations and volunteers also increases.
