TALLAHASSEE (SNN TV) – The largest proposed expansion of Florida’s school voucher program passes the state house Friday.
If the governor signs the bill, all K-12 students in Florida will be eligible for taxpayer-funded vouchers to attend private schools. It’ll also open up vouchers to homeschooled students.
Florida’s Republican House Speaker Paul Renner says this will “forever change the course of education in Florida.”
According to WFLA, many Democrats raised concerns about the bill, pointing to other states where vouchers were used by students already in private school. The Herald-Tribune reports concerns of driving kids to private schools that operate without accountability or regulation.
The bill passed mostly along party lines, 83-27.
The Florida Senate version is still being considered; it’s $7 million more expensive than the House version.
