LONGBOAT KEY (WSNN) – We now know the cause of the Longboat Key sewage spill that SNN covered over the summer.

Decades of corrosion and an underground log caused it to happen in Mid-June according to the Herald Tribune.

The Town of Longboat Key hired a contractor, Berkeley Research Group to investigate. The group reported that the log or root that undermined the only sewage disposal line in Manatee County, likely affected the exterior coating on the ductile iron waste pipe, causing the corrosion.

It spilled about 14.7 million of gallons of untreated sewage into Suncoast waters.
