BRADENTON (SNN-TV) – The State College of Florida Men’s Basketball team is holding a youth camp this week in Bradenton.

With the camp at its halfway point, the youngsters from the Suncoast are taking in the four day, fast-paced and educational camp, learning the skills and values of SCF Basketball.

The balance of skill and enjoyment is easily managed by Manatees Head Coach, Tom Parks. With the game evolving quickly, Parks says families with aspiring athletes should keep the joyful aspect of sports, the main focus for children.

“If you’re a parent, if you’re a coach, if you’re a trainer, just allow your kids to have fun. Instead of those conversations: “Why didn’t you do this? You should’ve done this.” You should be like: “Did you have fun today? Did you listen to your coach and have fun today? Were you a good teammate?” Those things are really important. I would love to see that aspect of youth sports be the primary thing. I think from there, when kids really love it, they’ll grow in the game and have so much more fun. They’ll still get to the same level, maybe even higher, if they’re having fun doing it.”

SCF Basketball plans to expand next summer with an extended camp, lasting 6-8 weeks.
