SARASOTA – As we inch closer to Florida’s Primaries on August 18th one community activist on the Suncoast looks to help those still fighting to get their right to make their voices be heard.

Up until 2018 Florida was one of four states in which a convicted felon could not regain their rights to vote. Now as were in the midst of an election season community activist Demetrius Jifunza is helping individuals regain their constitutional right restored.

But in June the U.S. Supreme Court declined on to overturn a federal appeals court’s choice that blocked some Florida felons eligibility to participate in elections until they pay all outstanding warrants.

“The fact that every time we move forward there’s a blow that tries to push us back. And notice I say try, it doesn’t necessarily push us back it just allows us to look at this from a different perspective,” said Jifunza. “So the main thing is that, I always say I want them to challenge me. I know where I’m at, I know what I’m up against. But the main thing that is important is to continue to move forward despite whatever obstacles may be in front of you”

Jifunza says they are now helping those individuals pay off any outstanding fees in order to get them registered for the next election season.
