SARASOTA – For those who served, the Humane Society of Sarasota County is spreading joy in a very special way this holiday season.

“What better gift to give than love, and there are a lot of deserving veterans out there,” said International Head Trainer for Paws and Warriors, Cedar Santanna.

With help from an anonymous donor, The Humane Society of Sarasota County is waiving pet adoptions fees for veterans and active duty military personnel.

“Our veterans and our military families have already sacrificed so much they give so much so it’s one small way that we can help their family add a little love for the holidays,” said Executive Director of the Humane Society of Sarasota County, Anna Gonce.

Lavonne Bower, CEO and Founder of Paws and Warriors says the program arrives at a perfect time

“Having a dog or a cat as a companion, the person is not going to feel alone, they have a reason to get out of bed, to exercise, to get out of the house and especially right now it helps them from feeling so isolated, it helps them feel like they have a sense of purpose and that’s really important especially right now during the holidays,” said CEO and Founder of Paws and Warriors, Levonne Bower.

Humane Society Executive Director Anna Gonce says the adoption process is quite simple

“If you’re a veteran if you are an active duty military, if you are army reserves please come down to our adoption center we’ll need you to provide some sort of proof of ID and then we will process your application and you’re adoption fee will be free,” said Gonce.

All HSSC pets are spayed an neutered before leaving the shelter and given preliminary vaccines and a bag of food.
