NORTH PORT (WSNN) – A South Sarasota resident in need is getting a new forever home.

“Everyone deserves a decent place to live,” Habitat for Humanity’s Executive Director, Shannon Hoyt said.

That’s why Habitat for Humanity in South Sarasota does what they do. Hoyt says they build about eight to 10 homes a year for people who can’t afford one.

“We do that through volunteer labor, through the community coming out and supporting the building of this home,” Hoyt said. “So they pay a monthly amount. There’s no interest, it’s based on the affordability for them.”

Fundraisers make it all possible. But, since the pandemic halted some of their major events, Hoyt says they had to think outside the box. That’s where Freedom Boat Club comes in.

“2020 has been a challenging year on a number of fronts,” Freedom Boat Club’s Director of Marketing, Nick Gosselin said. “So we wanted to do what we could to help raise some funds and help get the next house built for habitat.”

The Boat Club is raffling off a free membership worth about $12,000 through Habitat’s virtual fundraiser.

“We’re changing someone’s life,” Hoyt said. “Not just for a day; we are literally changing the trajectory of that family and those kid’s lives and as they grow up because their mom has affordable housing.”

A single mom will be going from living in a small overpriced rental place to living in a solid foundation build-out of love. You can even see some kind messages throughout the walls of the home.

One of the messages said, “Let this house be filled with lots of love and happiness.”

“And I hope this is a message for others to get involved as well,” Gosselin said. “If they’re looking for something to help cheer themselves up, I think giving towards others is that way to do it.”

The ticket value starts at 10-dollars. To donate to Habitat’s virtual fundraiser you can go here. The window closes on November 16th.
