TALLAHASSEE (SNN TV) – A bill working through the Florida legislature would ban discussion of menstrual cycles and STDs for grades 6 through 12.

The bill is sponsored by Republican Representative Stan McClain. He confirmed at a recent committee meeting that discussions about menstrual cycles would be restricted since it deals with human sexuality, WFLA reports.

McClain says his intention is to bring uniformity to sex education across Florida and open more ways for parents to object to subjects taught to children.

This Republican-backed bill cleared the House Education Quality Subcommittee Wednesday 13-5 mainly along party lines. A similar bill is making its way through the Florida Senate.
