PALM BEACH – Hurricane season is right around the corner and the Florida Power & Light Company wants you to be prepared.

“It’s not a question if we are going to be impacted by a storm, it’s simply a question of when and where and how bad it will be,” said FPL President & CEO Eric Silagy.

Thursday morning FPL conducted a simulated hurricane drill were a category 1 storm impacted the Miami-Dade County. The preparation comes after hurricane Irma, Matthew, and Michael severely impacted parts of Florida leaving hundreds without power.

“Training and drilling like this is critically important its part of our philosophy. It’s how we approach just being prepared every single day,” said Silagy.

FPL employees worked through a virtual hurricane pre-landfall to restoring power back to homes quickly. All done from their new state of the art Control Center.

“The key to being prepared is to drill as realistically as you can,” said Silagy. “To incorporate all the lessons learned from the storms that have hit us here previously as well as hit other places around the country.”

With the past three seasons being active, FPL urges all customers and residents to prepare… regardless of the seasonal outlook.

“It’s just another good reminder that Mother Nature is unpredictable, Mother Nature never takes a day off and she will end up creating some issues and curve balls for us so we’ll end up having to deal with,” said Silagy.

Since the historic 2004 and 2005 hurricane season, FPL has invested nearly $4 billion to build a stronger, smarter, and more storm-resilient energy grid.

“Every storm is different, every storm will throw a curve ball at you… or two or three. And it will require the bandwidth to deal with the unexpected,” said Silagy.
