ORLANDO (SNN TV) – Florida Democrats and a national gun safety group are attacking Florida’s new permitless carry law passed and signed by Florida Republicans.

Florida Republicans say the new law will eliminate what they call red tape to own a gun.

Gun control group Giffords, represented by former Florida congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, joined Florida congressman Maxwell Frost this past week to argue the restrictions are necessary. They said current Florida law prevented more than 7,600 Floridians with violent or risky behavior from getting concealed carry permits, but permitless carry would strip that away.

They also cite studies showing that weakening public carry laws was associated with a 13-15 percent increase in violent crime, with one study showing a 35 percent increase in gun homicides.

Representative Frost thinks signing this bill after the Nashville shooting is tone-deaf.

“Just last week, days after the tragic and senseless school shooting in Nashville that left six people dead including three children, our governor moved to sign into law this dangerous bill,” Frost says.

“And for people watching at home who aren’t necessarily sure what it is, I’ll make it very simple for you: it’s pretty much any gun, any person, any place, any time. And at a time when we’re losing 100 lives a day due to gun violence, over 300 Americans are shot on a daily basis, and thousands survive gun violence, that is unacceptable.”
