SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – Homebound seniors may have an opportunity to receive a COVID-19 vaccine after all.

SNN spoke to homebound seniors over the weekend who were struggling to get vaccinated.

Luckily, the Sarasota County Health Department says they’ve developed two strategies in helping homebound seniors get vaccines.

First, is ensuring that home healthcare providers are vaccinated. That way, they can help distribute vaccines when they become available.

Next, is understanding who they are when they register to get a vaccine.

“As we develop the scheduling system, the appointment system, that’s one of the categories we’re looking at,” DOH spokesperson, Steve Huard said. “We want to capture who they are and where they are in our community.”

Huard says they’re still early in the vaccine process, so they don’t have enough supply to sustain regular clinics for the 65 and older.

It may take a few weeks, but as availability increases, so will opportunities to distribute vaccines.
