SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) – The State Attorney’s office drops charges against a New College of Florida student who was accused of spitting on a New College trustee.

20-year-old Libby Harritty was charged with misdemeanor battery for spitting on Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist and New College trustee. He was appointed in January to help transform the public liberal arts college into a more right-wing Christian college akin to Michigan’s Hillsdale College. Rufo has been vocally critical of diversity policies and critical race theory and helped launch the debate over critical race theory nationwide.

The incident occurred on May 15 when DeSantis visited to sign a bill banning state funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs at state universities.

The state attorney’s office says Rufo requested charges be dropped since Harrity wouldn’t be attending or returning to New College.
