NORTH PORT (WSNN)– Brian Laundrie’s parents discovered that their gun was missing in September after their son disappeared.

The Laundrie family attorney, Steven Bertolino says Chris and Roberta Laundrie surrendered all their guns to law enforcement on September 17th, the same day they told authorities Brian was missing. That’s when they discovered that one handgun was not in its case, and immediately consulted law enforcement.

“Both LE and myself felt it was best for that information not to be public,” Bertolino told SNN in a statement.

Tuesday, the District 12 Medical Examiner reveal Brian Laundrie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after he disappeared during the search for his fiance, Gabby Petito.

“Imagine, with the frenzied atmosphere at the time, if the public thought Brian had a gun! Bertolino said in a statement. “I can’t speak to why LE did not reveal the info but we spoke about it at the time and I believe they felt as I did.”

While Brian Laundrie’s belongings and notebook were found with his remains, the FBI nor North Port police have said if there was a gun recovered from the Carlton Reserve.

“I do not know if a gun was found near Brian’s remains and possessions,” Bertolino said in a statement. “You would have to confirm that with LE.”
