SARASOTA, Fla. (SNN TV) – Booker High School is one of ten schools being honored by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA).

The Herald-Tribune reports Principal Dr. Rachel Shelley will accept the award Sunday during the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony in Gainesville.

Booker High was an original member of the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association (FIAA).

The FIAA merged with the Florida High School Athletic Association, or FHSAA and regulated athletic programs of black high schools in Florida before integrating in 1968.

Dr. Shelley has a personal connection to this award. Her father, Johnnie “Buddy” Abner, graduated from Booker in 1958. He played baseball, football, track and field and was also a lifeguard.
