SARASOTA – For nearly 50 years the Sarasota BMX track has been the training ground for some of the world’s top elite BMX riders. The oldest continuous track in America has hosted state, regional and national races. Bringing the best of the best to the Suncoast.

“The Sarasota BMX Academy works with the local professionals in regards to guest coaching,” says John Purse. “So that basically puts them active on the community.” “Every skill level; whether it’s the top level riders or even beginner’s”

Former 3x BMX World Champion and current Director of the Sarasota BMX Academy, John “the Jackal” Purse says when the Olympics were postponed until 2021, he had concerns over his summer camps. But as soon as the state entered phase two he went petal to the metal; bringing athletes like Tyler Klumper, who are fighting for a spot in the Olympics, to teach the next generation of BMX riders.

“So it’s a good all-around process, and I love being able to watch the progression with everyone and just watch the future of the sport, you know grow up and see what turns into what it’s going to be,” says Klumper.

BMX Mom Victoria Berden says unlike traditional summer camps the Sarasota BMX Olympic Day 2020 offers kids of all ages a chance to learn a new sport and feel normal again.

“Where they started a year ago and now they’re both on a team both for intermediate,” says Berden. “The amount of training they’ve deserved from John Purse and the other coaches on the team and the pros that come out.”

Joshua McLean has hopes to represent his home country of Australia in the 2021. He says come the end of the summer camp he hopes he’s able to help the kid’s confidence grow, to have patience, but most importantly…..

“Having fun. Just kind of enjoying it, instead of sitting at home at all time, but sometimes it’s nice to get away from the books and not spend all your time reading or something. Just get outside and have some fun,” says McLean.

Purse says no experience is required. The Sarasota BMX Olympic Day 2020 is Saturday. Registration to compete starts at 3 p.m. and the race begins at 5 p.m. CDC guidelines will be enforced with masks being provided to those who may not have one.
