BRADENTON – What began as a traffic stop led to a Suncoast man’s death. We spoke to Manatee County Sheriff’s Office about the updates on the deputy-involved shooting from this morning.
30 year old, Justin Lee Stackhouse, died Wednesday morning at Blake Medical Center after being shot several times.
Stackhouse died from what all began as a routine traffic stop.
“There’s a couple of investigations going on. We’re going to be investigating the actual shooting, which is considered a homicide,” Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Randy Warren, said. “And then we’re investigating a deputy-involved shooting, and that involves an internal investigation.
Just after midnight, Wednesday, a deputy tried to pull over Stackhouse, westbound on Cortez road.
Manatee county Sheriff’s spokesperson, Randy Warren, says Stackhouse, driving a red Chevrolet Impala, had damage to his car.
“It had been in some type of accident, the bumper, the fender was messed up. The tire had been shred,” Warren said.
The deputy called for backup when Stackhouse did not stop. Warren says Stackhouse drove off trying to pull in into Walmart, but ran into a curb.
Warren says Stackhouse was then stuck on the curb.
“They’re making verbal commands to this driver to give himself up,” Warren said.
But, deputies say Stackhouse, put his car in reverse.
“And was coming straight back at the deputy. And the deputy fired several rounds,” Warren said.
Warren says Stackhouse continued to drive and ran into another curb, where the deputies found him injured.
“They rendered aid and he was taken to a hospital and died around 1:40 this morning,” Warren said.
The Manatee county Sheriff’s office is still actively investigating.
“We still have a lot we want to determine before we can really say what exactly happened,” Warren said.
The family of Stackhouse planning on holding a vigil tonight at the scene on midnight.
