SARASOTA COUNTY (WSNN) – A very sweet homecoming in Sarasota, Wednesday night. A soldier returns home from overseas.
Just after seven, December 1st, a Delta flight lands at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport carrying precious cargo for Alex Corona Sr.. His son, Alex Jr. is a U.S. Marine who was stationed at Okinawa, Japan. After two years there, 24 hours in the air, and three different flights, Alex Jr. finally made it back home.
“I was getting nervous to see my dad again for the first time in two years,” Alex Jr. said.
“It was exciting, nerve-wracking, waiting for him to get off the plane,” Alex Sr. said.
While there was a lot of tension leading up to the moment, it was a sweet homecoming for this father and son.
“Pretty amazing,” Alex Jr. said. “I felt like was never going to come home after COVID and all that. I’m pretty happy.”
Alex Jr.’s mom was the main surprise of the evening. She flew in from Michigan to make this homecoming. Unfortunately, her flight was delayed, so she couldn’t be at the airport. But she finally reconnected with him at home.
“I’m excited to see all my friends all my family,” Alex Jr. said. “I haven’t seen my sisters or my brother in a long time, it’s going to be awesome.”
Overseas he received several awards, among them the National Defense Medal to a Global War on Terrorism Medal. For the next 6 months, he’s going to participate in a skillbridge program in Sarasota
“It’s a transitional opportunity so it can be the active duty service members back into civilian life,” Alex Jr. said.
There’s a lot to look forward to.
“Get to see my girlfriend Ally, my family back home and the food, definitely the food,” Alex Jr. said.
“I am looking forward to going fishing with him,” Alex Sr. said.
Welcome home Alex!
