SIESTA KEY (SNN TV) – A local group is campaigning to open Midnight Pass between Siesta and Casey Key.
The Herald Tribune reports that the Midnight Pass Society II is working with Sarasota County commissioners and state legislators to implement this. In 1983, two fishermen closed the pass due to their homes’ vulnerability to erosion. Over the last five decades, locals have pushed back, with some calling the effort “a complete waste of taxpayer money for Sarasota County to try to obtain permits that are not obtainable.”
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has already denied the county’s application twice. Still, Midnight Pass Society II members are pushing for the dredge to be dug up. They state their plan would improve the water quality in little Sarasota Bay and call it a “legacy project,” something for future generations to enjoy.
