FLORIDA – COVID-19 cases rise across Florida after appearing to slow down. That’s according to new federal data released Friday.

According to the Herald Tribune, coronavirus patient counts broke 4,000 this week, a first since February 17th.

Hospitalizations and case counts grew so much that the CDC recommends indoor masking in almost every county in Florida, including all of the Suncoast. Collier County, home of Naples and Marco Island just south of us, is an exception.

These are recommendations, however, as local governments cannot enforce mask mandates in Florida due to a bill Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law in 2021.

Many infections go unreported with the rise of at-home testing. There’s no evidence yet that this new Omicron subvariant, BA.5, is more severe than previous variants.
