(SNN TV) — For Hall of Fame broadcaster, Dick Vitale, a years worth of work all culminates one night in Sarasota.

“It’s my national championship,” Vitale said. “Coaches have their national championship, my national championship day is May, 7, and I have a game plan that I’m hoping and praying leads to victory.”

In 15 previous Dick Vitale Gala’s, the event has raised more than $37 million for pediatric cancer research. This year’s Gala, which will take place at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota, is limited to 500 people, compared to the typical 1,000, due to the coronavirus. So what is a ‘victory’ according to Vitale? The Diaper Dandy has set a goal to raise $5 million this Friday, with every penny going directly to the cause, combating pediatric cancer.

“I will tell you right now, I will win the national title on May, 7,” Vitale said. “I work 24/7 at this, my family, my people I work with, we wouldn’t do it if only part of the dollars were going to cancer research, all of it goes.”

Vitale, who earlier this year signed an extension with ESPN, continues to bring smiles and laughter to basketball fans around the globe, “but my god, this is one of the best things I’ve ever been involved in, raising dollars to help kids,” Vitale said.

The V-Foundation, representing the great Jim Valvano, has raised more than $260 million for cancer research. Vitale carries the legacy of Valvano, with the hope of one day putting an end to pediatric cancer.
